Self Initiated Project Photography

People, Places & Objects

First initial statement

For my self initiated project I found it hard first of all to find something that I was really interested in and could turn into a photography project. I started off looking at the things I hadn’t done before in photography and wanted to possibly look at and explore further.

I then came up with the idea of looking into People, Places, and Objects. The general topic I felt was quite broad, but like the thought of possibly including subtopics to photograph within my title.

One of the main reasons I wanted to look into this was that over the years I’ve learnt photography I’ve never really taken images of people on the streets around me for a purpose. I know that this is something that is hard to do and do right, but I feel I could learn from doing this and that the images wouldn’t necessarily need to be the perfect shot. I would want to capture the character of the person I was photographing and there expression at that time without them knowing, as well as taking images of them knowing.

Culture and identity was the main focus for this project, I wanted to look into areas around London known for there culture and the things linked to it. I also somehow wanted to include the idea of ‘A Day In The Life Of’.

To start my research I looked into ways you can document images, for example Documentary Photography being the obvious. I wanted to look at the best ways I could capture what I was trying to say, and portray that to the audience. After looking at other options I found that Street Photography would be the best way to take my images for this project.

From here I looked in-depth at various Street Photographers and the research behind taking a good image in this style. After experimenting taking my own images of people around Camden, I found that I was difficult to do, as I felt awkward taking image of people without there consent and not knowing, but this is something I will have to overcome to be able to take good images for my project.

Another idea that I thought of was to research significant building etc. in the area and photograph then now, and compare them to how they were years ago. I feel that this will be a very experimental project for me that I will be able to have fun with and allow me to look into a lot of different areas branching off of my heading, as Street Photography is usually done in black and white I would also like to start using film again, which may make my images look more appealing then digital.

I came across this artist whilst researching for this project.
